Carlos Javier Correa Oppenheimer Jr. is a Puerto Rican professional baseball shortstop who plays for the Minnesota Twins of Major League Baseball (MLB). He previously played MLB for the Houston Astros, who selected him first in the 2012 MLB draft.

Carlos made his MLB debut in 2015 with the Astros and won the American League (AL) Rookie of the Year Award. Further, in 2017, he appeared in the World Baseball Classic, won the AL Player of the Month Award for May, was named an MLB All-Star, and also won the World Series. In 2021, Carlos was named to his second All-Star Game and won the Gold Glove and Platinum Glove Awards. After seven seasons with Houston, he entered free agency and signed a three-year deal with the Twins.

Carlos Correa Discusses About Twins Contract

On Wednesday, it was first reported by a Puerto Rican newspaper that Carlos Correa has reiterated on national television that he’s withdrawing his contract with the current team ‘Minnesota Twins.’

While as a guest analyst on TBS’ coverage of the MLB playoffs this Thursday afternoon, Carlos said his time with the team was great. He added that he would love to be back with Minnesota. When asked about his future decision, Carlos said he’s leaving the contract talks to Scott Boras (his agent).

The conversation was not a long one as the focus shifted to Game 2 between the Astros and Mariners. 

Earlier, Carlos signed a three-year contract worth $105.3 million with Minnesota that includes language, which allows him to opt out after year 1 or 2. Currently, he is center stage for a bidding war. 

Minnesota’s future at shortstop is a mystery because Royce Lewis, who was drafted to be the future shortstop, is now recovering from a second torn ACL in as many years and isnt seems ready for the 2023 season start.

Carlos was born on 22nd September 1994 in Ponce, Puerto Rico. This family raised him in a small house in Barrio Velázquez (a fishing village), Santa Isabel, Puerto Rico. 

When he was five years old, Carlos was enrolled in a youth league. Later, he played as a first baseman due to his hitting skill, and alongside his father, he continued Carlos’s training daily during their free time. 

When Carlos was seven years old, he performed solidly in Santa Isabel’s Playita Cortada American Baseball Congress affiliate. Further, Rio Grande recruited Carlos to participate in the championship series in Atlanta. However, the distance between Santa Isabel and Rio Grande (the municipality) was difficult for the family. 

Later, the citizens of Santa Isabel began to organize charity games, and his original team gave their sales income to help pay for the travel. By that time, Carlos was Rio Grande’s pitcher and was also the tournament’s Most Valuable Player after striking out eight batters in a team comeback. When he was eleven, the family traveled to the municipality of Caguas for Carlos’s practices with higher-level teams. 

After a few years, the family moved from Barrio Velázquez due to recurrent floods. His brother joined Carlos in baseball practices, and the family was again forced to do odd jobs. 

Shortly, the Puerto Rico Baseball Academy and High School enrolled Carlos; his discipline and talents were visible to his coaches. The coaches offered transportation for working extra hours to improve his bat. 

In 2010, Carlos participated in the WWBA PG Underclassman World Championships and the Perfect Game BCS Finals. After attending one of the Perfect Game events, he adjusted his batting swing with his hitting coach, José Rivera. In 2011, he appeared at the PG BCS Under-18 Finals and East Coast Professional Showcase. However, Carlos’s performance at the 2011 PG World and National Showcases promoted him to the top of his class, earning him a place in the Aflac-PG All-American Game. He was named Rawlings’ Defensive Player of the Year. Carlos closed the year by appearing once in the PG WBAA World Championships.

Further, he opened 2012 by being selected the MVP in the Víctor Pellot Excellence Tournament. He gave an extraordinary performance for a shortstop, including a two-home run game. In the 2012 PG World Showcase, Carlos achieved a PG record with a 97-mile-per-hour throw across the infield.
