Gays who didn't ping your gaydar

Publish date: 2024-06-26

Clemens Schick - never pinged! Same with Raymond Burr. Is there anyone you were shocked turned out to be gay? (I'm anticipating smartass responses like Liberace.)

Ben Aldridge never stood out to me- that said, I've never seen him being interviewed in real life.

by Anonymousreply 1December 12, 2022 2:48 AM

I'm surprised about Ben as well.

by Anonymousreply 2December 12, 2022 2:52 AM

Earl Holliman. Daniel J Travanti.

by Anonymousreply 3December 12, 2022 2:54 AM

When I first noticed Julian Morris around 2008, playing Dr. Andrew Wade in E.R., I didn't think he was gay. I was very attracted to him, and I've thought since that maybe I liked him so much because I sensed unconsciously that he was a lover of pole, which I didn't find out until 2013, when I discovered Datalounge.

I liked NPH and Jonathan Bennett more than most actors long before I heard they were gay. My gaydar is very finely tuned, I suppose. I have a similar feeling about Andrew Garfield more currently. And maybe Aaron Tveit.

by Anonymousreply 4December 12, 2022 3:38 AM

Years ago I simply thought he was handsome. Now, more and more, I think that he is, indeed, a closeted gay guy.

Rock Hudson didn't when I was a teenager and saw his movies. Van Johnson didn't, either. I'm talking about in movies like The Caine Mutiny and Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo. Obviously, if these guys pinged, they couldn't have starred in the movies they did.

by Anonymousreply 17December 12, 2022 7:18 AM

Tom "The Seven Year Itch" Ewell. Outed in the Scotty Bowers documentary...

by Anonymousreply 18December 12, 2022 7:23 AM

R18 I just heard about that the other day. He didn't (still doesn't) seem gay to me.

What about Dan Dailey? Was he a cross dresser, only, or also gay/bi?

by Anonymousreply 21December 12, 2022 7:33 AM

R21, Dailey was bisexual, but loved a nice pinafore!

My BF, My first impression of him was That's allll Man! Until he did his Jackee "Mary" Or when he told me how much he admired Angela Landsbury for making her Positive moves video! Or when his college roommate's Answering machine message was "Stephen can't come to the phone right now I have him Tied up"

by Anonymousreply 23December 12, 2022 7:52 AM

Oops, that was Brett Eldridge.

by Anonymousreply 25December 12, 2022 7:59 AM

In Perry Mason, there are scenes where Raymond Burr queens out for a few seconds before he regains control of himself. People who don't know he was gay wouldn't notice it. Daniel J. Travanti definitely pinged in Hill Street Blues.

R4, I had a similar discovery about Julian Morris. I first noticed him in movies like "Cry Wolf" and "Donkey Punch" and I think I assumed he was probably just British. After a while I followed him on Instagram and started to notice all the photos that he & Landon Ross would post together. I started to realize that they must be more than just friends and that's around the time we began to discuss him on Datalounge.

by Anonymousreply 27December 12, 2022 9:13 AM

R30, I forgot about Kal! His fiance is cute. I think Kal’s the top.

r28 - so not gay then lol. He specifically says he is not gay and was still dating women in his (very) late 30's in 2010. He simply 'chooses' to mostly date men now.

So, bisexual.

I never saw the Harold and Kumar movie, but I like Kal as well. He's smart, which is a turn on for me.

Actually R28, it’s apparently called IMDB.

by Anonymousreply 66December 13, 2022 11:09 PM

Kal Penn was definitely a shocker. I was living in DC when he took a Hollywood break and went to work for the Obama administration. I thought he was extremely cute then and I'd admired him leaving acting temporarily for public service work.

If I had known he was gay and (at the time) single, I would have found him and he'd be my husband now. He'd have had no say in the matter.

by Anonymousreply 68December 13, 2022 11:17 PM

John Mahoney (the father from Frasier, among other roles).

I guess a lot of queens on this thread have never been to a gay bar. When I really started going to gay bars as a youngster by 1994 I was really surprised at the type of low key- easily pass for straight types I would see in them. Guys I would NEVER guess were gay walking down the street. I'm not taking about guys with builds ( so many queens today have builds that having a build on anyone seems kinda gay) these were slim, slightly rumpled guys who were not macho but on the masculine side- I happened to like slim rumpled guys.

by Anonymousreply 80December 14, 2022 2:18 PM

Malcolm Forbes

[Quote]Homoerotic art was splashed liberally on the walls of his Manhattan townhouse. He had a penchant for handsome young men hired as servers for his catered parties and dinners. Before the guests arrived he would lure one of them into his Jacuzzi and give him a blow job – followed by a $100 tip – and then send him back out to work his party. Same deal with the houseboys, bodyguards and chauffeurs. He often gave blow jobs to his male employees at his magazine office, with the door wide open, so others would not suspect what was going on. His son Steve was in an office not thirty feet away. His secretary, seated near the open door, but out of sight of his desk, knew never to just walk in. She always called first. Smart gal.

by Anonymousreply 209December 27, 2022 9:44 PM

OP, Clemins whatever is bi.

by Anonymousreply 210December 27, 2022 9:54 PM

R205, I remember him for a guest appearance on Star Trek. He left all his money to charity, so he must have died single. Sad.

by Anonymousreply 213December 28, 2022 4:02 AM

R213-Yes. He appeared in an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Is Tom Irwin truly gay? R217

by Anonymousreply 221December 29, 2022 2:54 AM

Yes, I’ve said it twice now. I don’t care if you don’t believe me.

by Anonymousreply 222December 29, 2022 3:19 AM

Relax, R217. I'm not calling you a liar; I'm just surprised. My So-Called Life is one of my favorite shows.

by Anonymousreply 223December 29, 2022 3:36 AM

R216 SORRY. The title of the thread is not "Guys who YOU want to be gay who don't ping."

by Anonymousreply 224December 30, 2022 1:44 PM

Drake us not a straight man R224 no matter what the voices in your head say. So Keep your mouth closed unless there's a cock coming towards it you blowhard.

by Anonymousreply 226December 30, 2022 2:31 PM

^ I think this thread is for openly gay people. Otherwise you could name anyone and say they are gay.

by Anonymousreply 227December 30, 2022 5:18 PM

R227- That's boring. I want to know all the gossip about the CLOSET QUEENS too.

by Anonymousreply 228December 31, 2022 1:30 AM

Yeah but the juiciest gossip on DL is usually made up.

by Anonymousreply 229December 31, 2022 2:52 AM

John (Marion) Wayne, Spencer Tracy, Rory Calhoun, Walter Pidgeon.

R208, btw, there was NO Christmas Miracle.

by Anonymousreply 232January 2, 2023 6:30 AM

R226 Speaking of blowhards and voices in your head, please present more straight men who don't ping because they're not gay, gramps.

by Anonymousreply 233January 2, 2023 10:57 AM

What is this gramps bullshit? R233 If you have something against the age of people who post here, why don't you go somewhere else, like Sesame Street or Romper Room?

by Anonymousreply 234January 3, 2023 8:39 PM

I was surprised to find out that Jason Butler Harner is gay. He played the bad guy in Changeling.

Nope. Just ask Kevin Spacey. Or Bruce Weber. Or the dearly departed James Levine.

by Anonymousreply 236February 2, 2023 5:13 AM

Robert Osborne didn't especially ping loudly. I mean I figured he had to be gay, but on the other hand if someone said he wasn't I probably wouldn't have been all, COME ON. He seemed like he could have been anything, and I didn't know anything about his life. Very discreet, anyhow.

by Anonymousreply 237February 2, 2023 5:25 AM

I'm still shocked and fascinated by the Alexis Smith / Craig "Peter Gunn" Stevens ordeal. Their 50 year marriage was supposedly as lavender as a Macy's perfume counter.

Alexis Smith was a tall, handsome woman but never gave me Kate Hepburn/Bulldyke vibes. And although Craig Stevens was one of Henry Wilson's "special" discoveries, he never pinged onscreen in any way, shape or form.

R239 I didn't know anything about this. Where did you read it or see it? I wouldn't call Alexis Smith 'handsome' - she was a beauty.

by Anonymousreply 244February 2, 2023 6:49 AM

[quote]Robert Osborne didn't especially ping loudly.

Robert Osborne pinged a lot. I could tell he was gay almost the moment I turned on TCM.

by Anonymousreply 245February 2, 2023 8:33 AM

R244, Alexis and Craig had a platonic marriage for decades.

by Anonymousreply 246February 2, 2023 3:47 PM

R245, He pinged so hard, I had to have my gaydar repaired.

by Anonymousreply 247February 2, 2023 3:48 PM

R239 How do you know that Alexis Smith was gay?

It's the classic square jawline.

by Anonymousreply 253February 3, 2023 2:23 AM

Still waiting for any backup of the claim of Smith and Stevens being in a lavender marriage. All I see when I Google it up is old posts on DL.

[quote]Robert Osborne pinged a lot. I could tell he was gay almost the moment I turned on TCM.

If he pinged that much how could he have done soaps and TV commercials playing straight guys? I thought he was probably gay but I didn't think he pinged a lot.

by Anonymousreply 254February 3, 2023 2:51 AM

R254, Osborne may have fooled the straights, but he didn't fool gays with functioning gaydar.

by Anonymousreply 255February 3, 2023 8:06 AM

Bryan Batt.

Mad Men. The part was a gay man trying to appear straight while working in an ad agency in NYC in the 50s. I thought he was really a straight playing the part.

Back in the day, Italian singer Tiziano Ferro never pinged to me. Maybe his coming out didn't cause too much sensationalism since he came out the same year as Ricky Martin, and by 2010 his career was basically over in Latin America due to his scandal in Mexico.

R260- Lee Majors is a connoisseur of COCK?

by Anonymousreply 267February 5, 2023 9:54 PM

This really good looking cashier at Trader Joe's in 2015- I would check him out every time I entered the store and then one day he seemed to flirt with me- asking my name and shaking my hand and asking where I lived

I've been shopping at Trader Joe's since 1997 and not before or since has a cashier introduced himself, shook my hand and asked where I lived and I've had chipper bubbly cashiers male and female but non did what this guy did. I never flirted back to this good looking TJ's employee- I feigned disinterest and I've regretted since then.

by Anonymousreply 268February 5, 2023 9:58 PM

R267, You’re unaware Lee was groomed by Rock Hudson?

by Anonymousreply 271February 6, 2023 1:18 AM

R268 Your story contains everything except the reason you feigned disinterest when someone you thought was attractive paid attention to you.

by Anonymousreply 272February 6, 2023 2:35 AM

R268, He most likely saw you as an easy mark.

by Anonymousreply 273February 6, 2023 3:11 AM

I spend an afternoon with Umberto Tozzi. Work related. Nice guy.

Bi maybe, he's Italian so it wouldn't surprise me, but he does have three children.

by Anonymousreply 274February 6, 2023 3:24 AM

John Ritter pinged but I guess he was straight (?)

by Anonymousreply 277February 6, 2023 3:56 AM

R271- I did not know that. I like JUICY dl gossip like that. Was Lee Majors gay for pay type or does he enjoy cock himself?

by Anonymousreply 278February 7, 2023 3:40 AM

R273- He saw me as an easy mark-

R272- When I thought the good looking Trader Joe's cashier was straight I felt quite comfortable checking him out every time I went to the store and thinking about him but when I realized that perhaps he was into guys- gay or bi it made me really uncomfortable. It's like that saying- Don't wish for something because it might come true. I just could not handle this really good looking guy flirting with me- I did not mention this before but one week later I was looking at some items in one of the aisles and all of a sudden I hear someone say behind my back HI JAMES!- as if he was my best friend. It was the gl cashier from the week before. I remembered his name but all I said was Hi, not Hi Greg. It sounded like disinterest. One has a brief window of opportunity and once the window closes the opportunity is gone for good. I wish he had never introduced himself and asked my name etc.

by Anonymousreply 281February 7, 2023 4:06 AM

R279, Sugar daddy, you idiot.

by Anonymousreply 283February 7, 2023 4:39 AM

R279- Oh

The cashier was younger than me but not young. I would say he was about 41 years old at the time.

by Anonymousreply 284February 7, 2023 5:00 AM

R248, Alexis Smith was outed by the openly lesbian writer Rita Mae Brown back in the 70s. Apparently the two had been lovers. You add to that the fact that Craig Stevens was a Henry Wilson discovery (like Rock Hudson & Tab Hunter) and the fact that Alexis & Craig never had children. It all comes out as Lavender when taken through the wash.

FYI, in addition to Alexis Smith, Rita Mae Brown also had affairs with Fannie Flagg (of "Match Game" fame), actress Susan Flannery, Martina Navratilova AND Martina's ex partner Judy Nelson! The gal laid a lot of carpet!

R284 Ok, thanks. I think if I were in that situation I would have also felt somewhat uncomfortable. But if the person approached me a second time at his job and was friendly, I probably would have at least had a conversation with him. It probably wouldn't have led to anything, because I don't don't act on my feelings often enough. Are you shy? It's still not especially clear why you were so standoffish with this guy.

by Anonymousreply 286February 7, 2023 6:24 AM

Here's a rare Craig Stevens interview with that dimwit Skip E. Lowe. The interview took place shortly after Alexis Smith had died in the 90s.

Craig seemed to be in mourning but HEAVILY emphasized the fact that he & Alexis were friends before anything else. It's very telling but of course that idiot Skip E. didn't pick up on it.

R285 I'm sure you know what you're talking about, but it seems like a long time to be together for the sake of a lavender marriage. According to what I've been reading, they were married at age 26 (Craig) and 23 (Alexis) and were engaged for two years before that. I'm not sure why people that young (24 and 21) would decide to get married to hide their sexual orientation, since it wouldn't be considered unusual to be unmarried at that age, or until they were about 10 years older. And not sure why they would stay together until the death of one of them. I'd guess they must have loved each other, maybe they swung both ways. Also some other Hollywood couples with long marriages (like Ann-Marget and Roger Stevens) never had kids.

by Anonymousreply 288February 7, 2023 6:52 AM

[quote]Fannie Flagg (of "Match Game" fame)

Flagg also wrote "Fried Green Tomatoes".

by Anonymousreply 289February 7, 2023 8:21 AM

R286- The day he went up to me and said hi as if I was his best friend- later in the parking lot he was standing near my car when I put my items in the trunk. I said nothing to him and left. He must have taken that as disinterest. A week after that I was FINALLY ready to say something to him. I was standing in a checkout line and he walked by carrying some shopping bags- he totally ignored me as if I was invisible.

by Anonymousreply 290February 7, 2023 2:13 PM

R285 Any link that says Rita Mae Brown was Alexis Smith's lover? Googling gives nothing, only another DL thread about Alexis Smith, where someone (you?) mentions it.

by Anonymousreply 291February 8, 2023 3:47 PM

Weren't some of Henry Willson's clients straight? I don't know the sexual orientation of everyone in old Hollywood but John Derek for ex. was one of Willson's clients who I think was straight. At least he had 2 or 3 gorgeous sex-symbol wives.

by Anonymousreply 293February 8, 2023 5:55 PM
