He’s had roles in more than 30 movies and TV series, and is perhaps still known best for playing Stu the Cabbie in the evergreen 1998 action science fiction adventure movie “Armageddon”, which Michael Bay directed, and which starred Ben Affleck, Billy Bob Thornton and Bruce Willis. Mark studied at St. Joseph Notre Dame High School, and was the class clown who enjoyed making his peers laugh, and was good at it, but at that time had no plans to become an actor or a comedian. Mark matriculated in 1979, and then enrolled at California State University, East Bay but dropped out after less than a year.

He began working at a drugstore, and his customers, as well as family and friends, encouraged him to pursue a career as a comedian and actor.

Roles in TV series

Mark’s debut TV series role was playing Tim Barker in six episodes of the 1980 comedy “Sounding Brass”, and his following role came in 1992, when cast to star as Mark Cooper in the critically acclaimed family sports comedy “Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper”. Jeff Franklin created the series, which also starred Sandra Quarterman and Holly Robinson Peete, and follows the life of a high school teacher; it aired its 101 episodes from 1992 through 1997, and won two of its nine award nominations.

The remainder of the decade saw Mark appear in only a single TV series: the 2008 episode “Reunited and… It Don’t Feel Good” of the family comedy “House of Payne”.
